I cannot help thinking of Beckett's work, Endgame, when following the democratic nomination tussle between Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama. Within Endgame, we find two characters, both mutually dependent on each other. Parallel opposites; one can't stand, the other one can't sit down, they have been fighting for years and one of them seems unable to leave. The play suggests that they live in a static, unchanging place, a sort of classical version of Groundhog day. Events take on a ritualistic behaviour, every day the same, right down to the death of one of the characters. Sounds familiar?
Meanwhile the McCain campaign shifts into gear to bring the republican future nominee to the nation. This is an interesting interview between John Hartwood of CNBC and the New York Times with Rick Davis, campaign manager for John McCain. It provides an insight into how the campaign will redirect itself to win over states that could go either way and whether they'll go for the brand.

Each US Presidential election is an interesting game to watch, but I think this one is even more so, because the Democrat candidates are both uncommon: a woman on one end, a Black man on the other. There is no regular WASP candidate this year, and I think it's quite revealing about the Democrats' wish around the country to bring change to the States.
I tried to listen to the press conference held by McCain, but is it me or is this the most soporific person in the world? He's so monotonous, he could announce the US go to war against the EU and that the US market is at its best and that the plague came in the country on the same tone, it's quite anti-communicative... My view is, this guy's boring. But then, the Republicans are known to be quite conservative, I think, so it figures that their representative would not be as excited and exciting as the Democrat one, who are trying to bring more change...
you're right, both candidates have seemingly 'unusual' profiles for a presidential candidate and interestingly neither colour or sex has been used as a critical weapon... so far. the next few weeks are going to be interesting: the judgement on the controversial florida voting, the denver convention looming. will this sort itself out before Denver, or will Hilary go right to the wire and the convention.
