593 - not a bad score if it was TOEFL, unfortunately this is the final score for the English cricket team in their current Test series and it is not enough to win over a strong and motivated South Africa. Lets hope we put on a better show tomorrow. Ah cricket, the sound of leather on willow. Mention the word here in mainland Europe and most people, other than myself, David Milton or Ron Basu at school, will look at you with a sympathetic but sad expression. Incomprehensible game, impenetrable logic, long, everyone wears white, slow moving, unexciting; choose your description. It's quintessentially English and a low key sport. Wrong. Move to Asia - Pacific or the southern hemisphere and it's a highly charged, emotional game, widely played and big business. I'm am reminded of a particularly pleasant conversation on the merits of this sport with a taxi driver taking me from the airport into Cape Town. India in particular is a lucrative market. It won the recent World Cup (yes it exists) and cricket figures in many a Bollywood movie as a federal sport and sign of social success. Don't believe me..? Nike does, they've created an ad just for the Indian market. I wonder what good ol Aggers would say about this?
