Learning Marketing Lessons from The US Elections

As President elect, Barack Obama, considers his future cabinet, here's an interesting analysis of the marketing lessons to be learned from this election by Seth Godin and in particular the use of tribal marketing in politics. Thanks to Stefane for the photograph.

The analysis is interesting, even if I am not sure to have clearly understand every concept (particularly the “base” concept, the definition is not well defined). However, the interesting analysis is that TV is clearly over! What is easier today than sharing a video on the net, with a blog or simply with a link? When you see the famous video “Don’t vote!” where celebrities encourage people to participate to polls (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhDRVKDcXQo for the uncensored version), it illustrates a lot this idea that a video has to be so interesting, that more than watching it, you will share it!

But if you consider candidates as brands and that marketing is tribal, the good question to ask would be to know what did precisely the Hillary’s tribe? How were they affected by the choice of Sarah Palin and how did they react? We already know that “3 tribes in one pick” was a failure for McCain, but I am definitively not convinced that the choice of Mike Huckabee would have lead to a victory of McCain. The situation would be different, but with the same result… Obama was a so important glimmer of hope for Americans, that more than selling a dream, he managed to build its own tribe with its own expectations… A most powerful tribe than any others…
