September 1st, Summer is now symbolically over and Autumn is here in most minds. No Indian Summer this time, however. A cold economic wind is blowing in from the west; 2 million people are currently leaving New Orleans to avoid Hurricane Gustav and its potentially disastrous aftermath, whilst 2,000 jobs are likely to be blown away in the announced 9bn euros takeover of Dresdner by Commerzbank , half of those jobs in London. Back here in mainland Europe, French Prime Minsister, François Fillon confirmed what most thought already, that French growth has stalled and is likely to be 1% this year. Cheerful eh?
