Fools rush in where Fish fail to swim

In the Uk it's a fool, in France it's a fish, but whichever you choose, April 1st is open season for playing pranks - only up to midday in the UK, otherwise the prankster becomes the fool. Noone really knows why we celebrate April 1st this way, some believe it dates back to roman origins, a ritualistic renewal ceremony. Others believe it centers round the change in calendar to the 'modern' Gregorian version. Today it tends to be a media bean feast with the most successful jokes coming from the more serious publications. A great example was the hallowed BBC and its Panorama programme covering the cultivation of spaghetti trees, or Quick introducing Whopper burgers for the left handed. A French newspaper caused outrage by suggesting that the Eiffel Tower would be dismantled and rebuilt in Disneyland. Today's Guardian announces that it will give up the printed page to move to Twitter, hmmmm, topical but I wonder? Whilst the prestigious Museum of Air and Space has announced the return of Concorde. John Rentoul applauds the Independent for its article on a new socialism. Says Mr Rentoul, "A brilliant pastiche of faux-academic sub-marxist cliché with as much meaningful content as Peter Sellers's original and best, "In the garden, growth has its seasons," as Chauncey Gardiner".... a bit too intellectual for me, I like my pranks basic, myself.
