They say there's no such thing as an original idea, but this is stretching it somewhat. A new literary genre is springing up or rather rising from the dead with the arrival of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Produced by Seth Grahame Smith, this new take on Jane Austen's classic is being spun as the first mainstream literary 'mash up', a term used to describe the trend of pulling together different literary genres. Poor old Elizabeth, feisty and sharp tongued as she was, has gathered up her skirts and been transformed into a kung fu expert, dedicated to ridding the quiet town of Meryton from the threat of a zombie invasion. Having already read, enjoyed but questioned the parallels between Bridget Jones and Elizabeth, I realise that Jane's classic tale of snobbism and true love is ageless and one could argue that some of the more bumptious characters in the novel were already zombie like in their behaviour. This latest version does seem to be taking it a tad too far, however. Apparently Elton John's film company Rocket Pictures is also tuned into the 'mash-up' trend with Pride and Predator in the pipeline (no it's not April 1st). Does this mean Schwarzenegger will play Mr Darcy? Shame it's not Hammer Films, they would know how to treat this kind of genre......
